Test canopy and finished canopy

Here's the test canopy I did when working out how the real thing should be made:

It had a three-tier layer of textured used to create a canopy effect:

Bottom layer:

However, I felt that this didn't produce the desired effect, considering that not a lot of canopy would be seen outside the window. So, instead of this, I decided to make a clump of leaves that could be bunched together as needed in engine to produce a layer of leaves outside the windows:
